Remembering, Forgetting
Completed as part of the 2025 Designers in Residence at EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim, Remembering, Forgetting: The Past & Potential of Pine Resin, is a continuation of Marks’ ongoing exploration into pine resin; a material that is naturally secreted by pine, fir and cedar trees whenever their bark is damaged, and which can be harvested for the entire mature life of a tree without harm.
Through both historical and hands on research it questions why we have forgotten so many applications for this versatile substance, and what can be gained when it’s remembered again and applied to contemporary contexts.
The project also touches on deeper themes surrounding our material culture. Questioning where materials come from, the consequences of extraction, and the extent to which they have to be processed in order to be useful.
In response all of the pieces comprise of exclusively natural materials that are minimally refined, biodegradable, a storer of carbon and capable of being sourced within close proximity of the city of Pforzheim.
In particular resins combination with textiles has been explored to produce a range of lights, handles and vessels.
